RE: [eclipse.org-planning-council] A suggested topic forPlanningCouncil Discussion

I might just be reiterating what's been said regarding
this topic already, but anyways:
The benefit of a coordinated release is to (1) be a
reliable vehicle of milestones for
commercial product planning, and (2) make it easy for
end-users to get any
participating project X together with all its
dependencies.
I think that in order to facilitate growth, projects
should be able to join for the
sake of (2) without too much
difficulties.
With respect to more difficult higher-level
requirements like UI consistency,
integration testing etc. I think it all comes down to
who is willing to pay the
resources required to do that. If company X
integrates projects a,b,c then
they should be encouraged to do
the integration testing early, report bugs
or even participate as committers in some of the
projects they are consuming.
If it turns out that more companies are interested in
such integration testing,
they might end up setting up an Open Source project
for integration testing
given combinations of projects. Or
if, on the other hand, an existing project
is interested in being well integrated
with others, then they might want to
contribute resources in such integration
testing.
I think that the balance of powers in a
free-market economy should
eventually help finding the
proper resources for all those efforts. And the
planning council, as the round table of those powers,
should help fostering
such collaborations more quickly.
The important point, though, is that especially for small
projects who are
willing to participate, the pressure of requirements should
not be too high.
That's why I like the idea of a two-tier approach: (a)
participating projects
and (b)
participating, validated projects if you will.
Currently, the validation phase (tier b) is only available
from commercial
companies selling integrated products or distributions. If
validation is to
be moved from commercial into Open Source that's ok but
it's not a
must; and especially, it should not exclude projects from
the (tier a)
coordinated release as
such.
