Declaration for the Eclipse IMP Project

The Eclipse IDE Meta-tooling Platform (the Eclipse IMP) is a proposed project under the Eclipse Technology Project (http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/imp/) .

Eclipse currently provides high-functionality IDEs for several languages. However, the cost of developing an IDE for a new language is prohibitively high because the APIs are tied to specific languages, and because building an IDE is an extremely knowledge-intensive task.

The Eclipse IMP's purpose is to assist language implementers in creating full-featured IDEs. By doing this we hope to expand the use of Eclipse to new programming domains and to encourage language design experimentation.
