As per the
Eclipse Development Process, we are notifying the Eclipse Membership-at-Large of
the intent of Greg Watson of Los Alamos National Laboratory to
propose the Eclipse Parallel Development Tools Project as part of the Technology PMC.
A brief
description of the project is below. A project proposal will be posted on www.eclipse.org within a few
weeks.
Eclipse Parallel Development Tools
Project
Best practice in parallel (i.e. multi-process)
application development has not advanced to the same degree as more traditional
programming methodologies. As a consequence, there is currently no open-source,
industry-strength, platform that provides a highly integrated environment
specifically designed for parallel program development. In order to address this
deficiency, this project aims to extend the Eclipse platform to support a rich
set of parallel programming languages and paradigms, and provide a core
infrastructure for the integration of a wide variety of parallel tools. The
result will be a portable, scalable, parallel tools infrastructure that will
promote the development and deployment of high quality parallel computer
programs.
There are five key components to this
project:
1. Parallel Execution Environment - extend the
execution environment to support the launching and control of programs on a wide
range of parallel architectures.
2. Parallel Debugger - add the capability to debug
parallel programs that are launched through the parallel execution
environment.
3. Parallel Tool Integration - define and develop an
infrastructure that will support the integration of a range of parallel
development and performance analysis tools.
4. Parallel End-User Support - provide a rich
environment to support the end-users of parallel applications.
5. Fortran Development Tools - tools to support the
development of Fortran language programs.
