Re: [eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] Orion workshop/tutorial at ECE

Hackathons : I think it is a great idea if we can secure some participants. Having a list of high-profile people from the
community would help us advertise the event.

As for the Orion tutorial, I attended the first one at ECE last year, it was a bit "rough around the edges", you could tell it was one of the firsts, but well done and refreshing from a technology perspective. I would go to an updated one. It was only focused on client-side extension which is a bit sad as then you can't do much, but server-side extension would require to compile your Orion server, add your services, launch it and so on. It makes you use Eclipse + Orion to develop and can be cumbersome. If the Node.js tutorial would be more about "Extending Orion on Node" then I think it would be quite interesting as the tutorial could cover both client-side and server-side extension. Looks like it is only focused on building a Node.js application which has little relevance to EclipseCon then.

Dear PC,

the committee is not just me and Martin :-). I want to get more feedback
on this !!!!

Even if you just agree with Martin. Especially I am interested in your
thoughts about the two alternatives that John proposed.

Any feedback about hackathons ???

Hey!

+1 for the general Orion tutorial

The node.js variant sounds interesting, but EclipseCon is maybe the
wrong platform for that. Therefore my strong vote for the general Orion
tutorial. We should definitely have that in the program.

Cheers,
Martin

Hi Christian,

Do you think there is interest in us submitting an Orion workshop for
EclipseCon Europe? We did one last year and I think it went well. We
have added more capabilities and material over the past year so it
wouldn't be an exact repeat. I'm just not sure the PC perspective on
"repeat" tutorials versus more fresh content. We could alternatvely do
a "Node.js development with Orion" workshop but that is maybe more of
a niche interest for typical EclipseCon attendees. Let me know any
thoughts you have (and I realize this doesn't say anything about what
gets accepted because that is a decision for the full PC in the end).

Thanks,
john
