Subject: Submissions EclipseCon Europe

Hi Christian

I was mildly surprised to find that both our submissions were declined, but what really took me aback were the comments. Maybe you could provide some deeper insight into what lead to our talks being declined? Please note that I’m not trying to question your choices, I’m really just rather confused and would like to know more about the selection process.

·         Our proposal “Industrial Grade Modeling with Xtext” was declined because “… [our] submission does not promise much new insights or special experiences.”.
o    We not only use Xtext in a way which is attested by itemis to be unparalleled, we have also largely extended both design time and runtime of the framework.
o    How do the following accepted submissions “beat” our proposal?
§   “DESAGN - Xtext at the cutting edge” - They write that they have created two languages using xtext in a talk at beginner level, so the way I understand their submission, they are merely using the framework and employ a rather limited part of it’s functionality – am I wrong?
§  “Massively Reducing the Effort to Test Xtext Languages” - presented in a BoF session last year. What new insights does it promise that our talk did not? (We went a step further and actually used DSLs to test our DSLs, so that we notice if something breaks – quite unlike the presented approach using comments)
§  … - I didn’t go on looking at the proposals, but at least some of them seemed to merit the above mentioned turn down reason more than ours did
·         Our proposal “Marrying JEE and OSGi using DSLs” was declined because “…we weren't able to figure out the exact connection to the Eclipse ecosystem of projects…”
o    I would have been glad if we had been contacted in order to clarify. We depend explicitly on EclipseLink and we develop / build and deploy in a heavily leveraged Eclipse environment.

Best regards, see you at Ludwigsburg,
Chris

Thank you for submitting your proposal Industrial Grade Modeling with Xtext
for EclipseCon Europe 2012 (ECE) and OSGi Community Event 2012.

We received many more proposals than we have space for, and thus have been
forced to decline a large number of quality submissions. Unfortunately, and
with our apologies, your proposal is one of those we had to leave out for
this event. If there are any changes to the agenda and we are able to accept
your talk, we will contact you immediately.

We provided comments on most declined talks to explain why they were not
accepted; please see the comments below. You may also view them on your
account page on the ECE website. We hope you find these useful when sending
proposals for future conferences. If you have questions for the program
committee after reviewing the comments, please send email to
speakers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

If you don’t see any comments included in this email and you would like
more information, please contact us at speakers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

We look forward to seeing you at the conference, and we urge you to register
early http://www.eclipsecon.org/europe2012/registration to take advantage of
the lowest price.

Regards,

Christian Campo, Program Chair
On behalf of the ECE 2012 Program Committee

PC Comments:

We received many talks about XText and DSLs, so we had to decline lots of
them. Compared to other talks, your submission does not promise much new
insights or special experiences.

PC Comments:

We are sorry for rejecting your proposal. The main reason for that is that
(aside of the underlying OSGi technology) we weren't able to figure out the
exact connection to the Eclipse ecosystem of projects and what exactly the
audience would get from this. It sounds more like a general "how to combine
JEE and OSGi" talk that might fit for the OSGi conference, but even there, I
guess, the abstract should be more explicit about what you would show
exactly, why people should look at this instead of going with an OSGi
enterprise spec talk. From the xText perspective, this talk could be an
interesting experience report, but there were too many proposals for those
kind of talks, so that we couldn't include them all. Maybe having a BoF
session about xText experiences would be a good fit for this and I would like
to encourage you to propose such a BoF session at the conference, maybe in
collaboration with the xText people themselves? Would be great, I think.
