Re: [eclipse.org-architecture-council] Serious issue with Eclipse and menus on macOS 10.13

Torkild,

Do you think the following problem reported in the newcomers forum is an example of this problem:

https://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/mv/msg/1088892/1772827/#msg_1772827

How can one install a virtual machine with this version of MacOS to test it?

Regards,
Ed

Hi all,

My apologies, I’m not convinced that this is the right forum, but I figured some awareness of the issue in this council would not be out of order.

So, macOS 10.13 is about to be released, and some months ago an issue with the early betas was raised[1]. The problem was that the Eclipse IDE menu bar would only have disabled items and there is apparently no way to work around it. I did some testing using virtual machines during the beta period and was unable to reproduce the problem.

Yesterday, after our meeting, I upgraded my workstation to the gold master version (GM), assuming that I would be just fine. But I was wrong. In every Eclipse RCP/Platform based application I tried, three incarnations of the IDE including the latest Photon and the RCP I am working on, all menu items were disabled. So I’m quite worried that we’ll have a shitstorm heading our way in little over a week (25. September).

I've also tested with a plain SWT application and the menus worked as expected. So I don’t think it’s purely an SWT issue.

The GM is not as stable as I was expecting, so I assume there will be at least another version. But I’m not convinced that Apple will have a fix for this issue before the release.

We should probably have some plan in place to mitigate this even if we can come up with a fix. I think we’re too late for Oxygen.1, assuming we could find a solution in the next few days.

Best regards,
Torkild
