[eclipse.org-architecture-council] [Bug 355418] New: p2 repository links on project download pages confuse some users

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=355418
Product/Component: Community / Architecture Council

Summary: p2 repository links on project download pages confuse
                    some users
    Classification: Eclipse Foundation
           Product: Community
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: Architecture Council
        AssignedTo: eclipse.org-architecture-council@xxxxxxxxxxx
        ReportedBy: wayne@xxxxxxxxxxx

We receive a few emails every week about broken links to p2 repositories on
various project download pages. Over the last couple of weeks, much of the
activity has centered around the EGit project.

Having URLs to p2 repositories manifest as clickable links is problematic for
the community. I look to the Architecture Council for guidance on how to
address this.

Some suggestions:

1) encourage projects to include an index.html/index.php in their repos to
describe what happens/what the user should do.
2) encourage projects to not make links to p2 repositories clickable.

It might also be a good idea to encourage projects to include drag and dropable
Eclipse Marketplace install icons.

Your thoughts?
