Greetings esteemed colleagues of the Architecture Council.

I have a proposal in to create the Eclipse IDE for Education (IDE4EDU) project
[1]. This proposal will see the IDE4EDU component from the SOC project moved
into it's own project under the Technology Top-level. IDE4EDU is about
providing a streamlined IDE targeting post-secondary students, particularly
those just starting in a computer science/engineering/programming discipline.
Initial efforts have been focused on building a simplified Java development
environment. We have also been working on support for Scheme and are
considering Prolog.

We want to separate this from the SOC project primarily so that we can have
finer grained control over the project releases. While SOC was a good starter
home for the work, we believe that an independent project is a better home.

Currently, the proposal features one (excessively handsome) mentor and is
looking for a second.
