Re: [eclipse-pmc] Mars (4.5) Release Review Material

+1, I read through the material and it looks good to me. Thanks for putting this together, Dani. A couple of comments:
  • I believe this is the first release that will not run at all on Java 6, so I think that is worth noting in the "Architectural Issues" section.
  • As a response to Martin's PDE comment, I think it is fair to have a comment that PDE Build is in maintenance mode and is no longer used to build the platform itself. I may even be worth saying it is entirely deprecated.
  • In the security section, "Eclipse top-level continues " should say either "Eclipse top-level project continues" or "Eclipse project continues"

Hi Dani,

Great work – very informational while not too verbose, and well structured. I like it a lot, thanks to the author(s) for great work, +1 approved !

Some minor comments – mostly cosmetic:

1.       Clicking the planurl (“Mars Plan”) doesn’t work for me, perhaps you need https://www now instead of http://www ? This URL worked for me though the styling looks a bit basic: https://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/development/plans/eclipse_project_plan_4_5.xml

2.       In the overview, you mention “performance and stability” though later on you also mention “usability” as a theme. To me, bringing back Perspective Customization/Export/Import in Mars is a significant achievement in the Usability sector so I think it would make sense exposing that a bit more prominently. https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=378811 isn’t even mentioned in the N&N or the Plan at the moment ?!?
a.       Might make sense wording the overview “For more details, see the Mars Plan and the New & Noteworthy below.”

3.       Architectural Issues section: “More APIs have been released” in this context sounds like it’s a problem or a bad thing ? But likely wasn’t meant that way. Perhaps move the “More APIs” sentence under the “API Certification” headline ?

4.       Non-Code Aspects section: “Open accessibility bugs” would be good if hyperlinked to a bugzilla query

5.       Usability section: “Eclipse User Interface Guidelines” should be a clickable hyperlink

6.       End of Life section: The “deprecated API removals” hyperlink points to cgit master, would it make sense pointing to a tag or branch instead for 4.5 ?
a.       In the documented, consider changing the headline “API removals after June 2015” to “Planned API removals after June 2015”
Since people may read this document at a later time, it should be clear what has been done versus what was planned

7.       Communities section – Would be good to have clickable hyperlinks for   http://planeteclipse.org , http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/IRC and http://stackoverflow.com

8.       PDE – would it make sense to talk about the situation in “PDE Build” versus Maven / Tycho, in the “Architectural Issues” section ? – There is some confusion around these two in the wider Plugin Developers Community I think (“Is PDE Build deprecated? Is it still supported ? Do I have to switch to Tycho?”) .

Thanks,
Martin
