Re: [eclipse-pmc] Requirement on Java 7 in order to move up to Jetty 9.

Hi Tom,

We covered this in the Eclipse PMC call today [1]. We all agreed that this move makes sense, and we will therefore drop Java 6 entirely from our reference platform list. As you say some bundles will continue to operate on Java 6 or earlier but they will not be receiving dedicated testing.

The Equinox project has several requests to move up to Jetty 9 for its http implementation (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=401784).  The Equinox http implementation is the underpinnings of the Eclipse Help system.  Jetty 9, or more specifically the servlet 3.1 specification Jetty 9 implements, requires Java 7.

This is a request to the Eclipse PMC to approve the move to require Java 7 in order to run the Eclipse help system for the Mars release.  All other components of Equinox which the Eclipse project uses plan to still support Java 6.
