Effort 1: CSS styling technologies
Effort 2: Declarative UI composition (XSWT, XForms, etc.)

I'm also +1 on looking for an EMF-compatible solution.

The main challenge I see there: I see no clean way to define an XML schema across all SWT controls since new SWT controls are being invented continually in any non-trivial project.

Ed, Tom: any ideas?  Or have you already thought of this and handled it somehow, Tom?
