[eclipse-dev] Reference platform JREs

Part of the process of selecting reference platforms for the Eclipse platform involves selecting reference Java runtime environments (JREs). Often this is just the most current service release or update for a given operating system, but it may be an older JRE if there are problems with a newer one. I would like to solicit community input on particular JRE versions that we should consider or avoid as reference JREs for the Helios release of the Eclipse platform. Please provide this input in bug 288810 [1]. For example, if you know of a VM bug that makes a particular JRE version unusable for Eclipse (such as [2]), or if there is a new VM feature that gives us a compelling reason to move up (such as 64-bit reference compression), we'd like to know about it. In the end, we'll only list reference platforms that someone has committed to regularly test, but your input could help us in focusing our limited testing resources on the most appropriate JRE versions. Note that we are already aware of the breakpoint bug in recent Sun Java 6 JREs [3].

Thanks,
John
