About a year ago the infrastructure
folks mentioned that newsgroups would duplicated as mailing lists, and
the mailing lists would be available via newsgroups.
Readers could choose their preferred
viewing format.

I agree with adam.  Trust me, you
don't want the newsgroups in "push" format.  However, development
mailing lists as newsgroups would be a great idea.

this question has been asked before.
the answer is: most people prefer newsgroups (very much). me too. 
newgroups don't pollute your mailbox, cause less spam, are easier accessible
from 
any computer (you don't have to access your mailbox), allow tracking threads,
or ignoring threads, etc.
newsgroups are simply better.
