Re: [eclipse-dev] Missing 2 days of newsgroup messages

People who are not subscribed to this mailing list will not know that resetting their subscription will allow them to read new posts.  And of course there's no way to post this information either.  And, as Daniel points out, you will lose all bookmarked threads, so it's not something people just do.

I don't see everyone figuring this out on their own.  The workarounds for each newsreader should be posted on the eclipse homepage, and maybe the other mailing lists.

However, it seems that several messages that were posted just before the
server crashed are corrupted
I reconnected from scratch (new connection and new subscription) and it
looks as if all messages starting somewhat on July 5 and rebooting of the
server on July 8 got lost. The same is the case using Eclipse's simple web
interface
(http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/thread.php?group=eclipse.platform).
For example from eclipse.platform I see
* Eclipse in a confused state and not acceping input - 05.07.2003 17:45

http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/article.php?id=3742&group=eclipse.platform
and the next message I see is:
* TreeViewer article ,  model->UI notification [08.07.2003 18:06]

http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/article.php?id=3743&group=eclipse.platform

Same problem for the other newsgroups.

>or in some cases, unsubscribe and resubscribe to the newsgroups.
Is there no way to restore the messages so that newsreaders (or at least
Mozilla ;-) can recover? All my previous triage work will be lost i.e. the
information which threads to ignore and which ones to watch.

The server that the newsgroups reside on crashed today at noon and I had to
reboot it.  It appears that the filesystem recovered from the journal
appropriately.  However, it seems that several messages that were posted
just before the server crashed are corrupted.  Consequently, people who are
having problems reading the newsgroups may need to restart their
newsreader, or in some cases, unsubscribe and resubscribe to the
newsgroups.

This server is on new hardware that was tested in our lab for several weeks
before I deployed it on Saturday.  I am investigating the root cause of
this failure.

It seems to be a selective problem. Luc and I are able to read and write
new
posts just fine and we're running machines on the same network as DarinS.
