EclipseCon Europe / OSGi Community Event News | August 30, 2012

Two for One:
OSGi Community Event and
EclipseCon Europe

We are very happy to haveOSGi Community Event co-locating with EclipseCon Europe this year. The two conferences are truly intermingled, in that all attendees are welcome to attend any session, whether it is part of the ECE program or part of the OSGi program. To accommodate the additional content, we have expanded into another venue that is very close to the Forum. On Tuesday afternoon and all day Wednesday, two tracks will be at the Film- und Medienzentrum (FMZ), just east of the Forum. There is a map showing the venue locations on the Venue page on the ECE website.

The theme for OSGi Community Event 2012 is "Reducing Complexity with OSGi." The OSGi programemphasizes why modularity is important, and how OSGi technology is the best way to modularize Java applications and enable innovative business solutions.

Keynotes

The lineup of featured keynote speakers this year is amazing. Each talk promises to be relevant and dynamic, and each will be very different from the others.

Christian's Favorite Talks

Christian Campo is the ECE 2012 program committee chair. (Some of you know him as the project lead for the Eclipse Riena project or as PMC lead on Eclipse RT. Christian is a busy guy.) As PC chair, Christian is very familiar with the talks that were submitted this year. Here are some of his favorites.

Jnario - BDD for Java Jnario is a test framework for Java that allows you to write test specifications in a readable DSL and use them for testing and documentation.
Living on the Edge: Supporting Native e4 Contributions to Eclipse 4 Of course Eclipse 4 is an important topic this year, and here is an extended talk from two of the key Eclipse 4 committers, teaching us how to use it.
An Inspirational World Tour: Remarkable Applications Built on EclipseJon Dearden was an early pick this year with his talk. He won a design prize in the Mars Rover competition at EclipseCon 2011, so I have high expectations for this talk, where Jon highlights what he thinks are significant Eclipse applications.
Welcome to the New Web We have great keynote speakers this year. Most notably, I look forward to Chris Heilmann and his vision of HTML5 and the new web.

EclipseCon Europe Update | September 13, 2011

10th Birthday

Come celebrate ten years of Eclipse at EclipseCon Europe! This November, it will be ten years since IBM first released Eclipse under an open-source license. A lot of great things have happened in those years, so we have reason to celebrate.

EclipseCon Europe will kick off our 10th birthday celebrations. We will, of course, have a party, a cake, and lots of fun. We are thrilled to have John Swainson, the IBM executive who made the decision to open source Eclipse, present a retrospective on the ten years of Eclipse and the considerations involved in creating Eclipse as an open-source project.

Ten years of Eclipse has meant ten years of great community, technology, and friendships. We hope you will come celebrate!

Technical Program

The EclipseCon Europe keynotes and technical program have been announced. Featured keynote speakers are John Swainson, former IBM executive who created Eclipse; David Cuartielles, founder of Arduino; and Bran Selic, a pioneer in model-driven development. We have over 100 different technical talks and tutorials from Eclipse experts and practitioners. As always, the program is packed full of insights and education on the latest Eclipse technology.

Java 7 Summit

EclipseCon Europe is proud to be hosting the Java 7 Summit in collaboration with Oracle. Running in parallel with EclipseCon Europe, the Java 7 Summit provides in-depth talks about the latest Java 7 release. This is a great opportunity to learn about changes and improvements in Java 7 from experts in the field.

During November and December, you're invited to attend Eclipse DemoCamps around the world. Each event features a series of short demos presented by members of the community and there are many great opportunities for networking. You don't need to be a software developer to attend! Included in this series are several "Campus" DemoCamps organized by and for university students.

There are currently 28 DemoCamps scheduled in 11 countries from November 1 - December 7, 2010. Check out the wiki page at http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse_DemoCamps_November_2010 for a location near you. Add your name if you'd like to give a demo or attend an event. We hope to see you there!

Hello all,

The technical program for Eclipse Summit Europe is up on the ESE conference website [1]. You'll see an outstanding line-up of sessions and speakers to ensure another great ESE experience.

We're featuring three keynote speakers: Prof. Hendrik Speck, Professor of Digital Media at the University of Application Sciences Kaiserslautem; Dr. Jeff Norris, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory: and Prof. Dr. Gunter Dück, IBM Distinguished Engineer and Chief Technologist for strategic direction and cultural change. Our keynotes are all known industry experts who give insightful and passionate perspectives in their area of expertise. Attendees of EclipseCon 2010 will recall Dr. Norris's keynote receiving a standing ovation.

The venue is once again the Forum am Schlosspark in Ludwigsburg Germany, and dates are November 2 - 4, 2010. Register now [2] for another great conference experience. The cost to pre-register is €500 (US$660), with discounts for alumni, members, and committers.

[eclipse-announce-europe] Eclipse Training Series for Fall 2010

The Eclipse Foundation and Eclipse member companies are once again holding a fall training series. The training is an excellent opportunity for software developers and architects to learn more about Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP), BIRT and Modeling. Eclipse experts will lead the sessions, providing practical experience through classroom instruction and hands-on labs. Virtual and on-site classes have been scheduled in several countries from September 20 to November 5, 2010.

[eclipse-announce-europe] ESE 2010 last call for papers!

Submissions for Eclipse Summit Europe 2010 [1] close next week. The deadine to submit your talk is Monday, August 16.

ESE 2010 topics include Eclipse 4.0 (e4), Embedded, Modeling, Runtime, and Other/New & Noteworthy. We're accepting proposals for short talks, long talks, tutorials, and symposia. For details on how to submit, please see the ESE 2010 submissions web page [2].

The Program Committee is looking forward to creating another excellent technical program for the conference. We look forward to reviewing your proposals, and seeing you in Ludwigsburg on November 2!

[eclipse-announce-europe] Submit Your Talk Early for Eclipse Summit Europe

Eclipse Summit Europe (ESE) will be held November 2-4, 2010 in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The Program Committee is now accepting proposals for session talks at the conference. The main topics areas for ESE 2010 are embedded, modeling, runtimes, and Eclipse SDK 4.0 (e4). The deadline for submissions is August 16, 2010.

To encourage you to submit your ideas early (rather than waiting until August 16), the Program Committee will select five early-bird talks from the submissions sent in by August 2. This means you have two weeks to submit a talk to be considered for the early-bird selection. The submitters of the five chosen talks receive an ESE shirt! Early-bird selections will be announced August 9.

The Program Committee is looking forward to creating another excellent technical program for the conference. We look forward to reviewing your proposals and ideas!

The Eclipse Foundation wants to better understand how you develop software, use Eclipse and interact with open source communities. Therefore, we are asking people to give us their feedback by participating in the Eclipse Community Survey 2010. The results will be published by the Eclipse Foundation in June 2010.

Everyone is invited to complete the survey before May 15, 2010. It should take less than 10 minutes to complete. All responses will be held in confidence. As a token of appreciation, survey participants will be entered into a draw for an opportunity to win Eclipse shirts and grand prize of a pass to Eclipse Summit Europe 2010 or EclipseCon 2011.
