There have been some small changes...mostly bug fixes.

Not sure what you mean by alternatives.  There is an abstract sync API 
(org.eclipse.ecf.sync bundle), that can be implemented via other 
providers.  That does provide some alternatives.

There was also an effort to implement a Google Wave-based provider...and 
that did result in this work
