What if I use r-OSGi? Would this help? I'm already using OSGI environment.

No, not particularly...since r-OSGI is also pass-by-value. Further, r-OSGi is already an ECF remote services provider as well...i.e. it's one of our distribution providers.

If you are stuck with trying to remote an interface that requires pass-by-reference, then I would consider creating a facade API on top of it (i.e. creating a brand new api specifically for remote access), and using the existing API as implementation. Finding a pass-by-reference distribution system these days (other than RMI) is going to be difficult, I would expect.
