[ecf-dev] Note from 7/18/2011 conference call

Hi Folks,

The agenda for today's meeting was here [1].

The main items:

A. ECF 3.5.2 maintenance release...when?
Given that the Indigo 3.7.1 maintenance release is in mid Sept, I think it's going to be necessary to have the ECF 3.5.2 release *prior* to the Indigo 3.7.1 release rather than concurrently (because both require releng work and there is short supply of that for us). So, I'm going to propose that we target this date for ECF 3.5.2:

August 29, 2011

This will be a maintenance release (no API changes, no new features, just bug fixes). If you have comments/thoughts about that day, please say so here.

B. ECF 3.6...when...and more importantly...what?

When?

I propose that we target early->mid October 2011 for the ECF 3.6 release. This gives us some time to add things, have a release review. Further, the release then will happen before EclipseCon Europe 2011.

What?

There are a number of idea for additions to add for 3.6...here are my favorites:

1) Restlet provider. I've just implemented a remote services provider based upon the popular Restlet framework (see blog posting [2]). This allows people to define, export, and import OSGi remote services using Restlet. It's pretty cool, I have to say...as one gets all the benefits of using a standard protocol (http), with a standard remote services api (OSGi remote services), with a standard remote services management (OSGi remote services admin). Further, the implementation of the provider is tiny and fairly simple.

2) ECF Documentation, Tutorials, Examples [3]. More needed here...of course.

The following are ones that I can't speak for myself (i.e. work driven by other committers)...so they may not be possible for 3.6...but I think we should at least consider whether they make sense/could work for 3.6:

3) The Salvo Newsreader

4) Twitter provider/Tweethub improvments (+integration with Salvo and/or other EF projects?)

5) Wave Provider (e.g. for mobile game support [4]).

6) Integrating Httpclient 4.0-based filetransfer provider contribution [5]

...and some wacky thoughts

7) XMPP server based upon OpenFire

8) Integration with Google+ (e.g. circles)

Other ideas that people have had, have, want to have. Note that in general, though, contributions are going to be necessary to do things, as resources (time) are currently very limited (for me...and for others that I know about).

Thanks,

Scott
