Re: [e4-dev] Model tweaking round 3

Tom, thanks for posting the general 'heads up'.

This will almost certainly be the last opportunity to make model changes for design purposes. The reason is that we are flat up against the wall as far as getting the Eclipse 4.0 release together, we simply will not have the time to address further churn in the model until after the July release. Model changes that are necessary in order to implement the compatibility layer are exceptions (for obvious reasons).

This does not mean that we're finished but that, for now, we have to lock it down until 4.0 gets out. I expect that as folks start to use 4.0 with their components we'll uncover any number of places where we can improve things.

If you have *specific* model changes with a substantial use-case for why it's needed please place them onto bug 305586, ASAP because as Tom says we expect that  these changes will take place immediately after this milestone is done (aka next week).

Perhaps we should talk this over at tomorrow's e4 call...

115 days left until Eclipse 4.0 ships!
Eric

Hi,

I plan to start my model tweaking today (Apr. 7th) in the evening CET in
an extra branch of the org.eclipse.e4.ui.model.workbench (See
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=305586).

Once we reached an agreement on the changes to the model in there we
need a coordinated effort to update ALL our code to the breaking changes.

I can't do this on my own (I can only keep my tooling code up-to-date)
and need the help from ALL project owners. I hope that the model-branch
changes are done by Monday/Tuesday next week and we can adjust the rest
of the code base to it immediately afterwards.

I'll keep you informed about the changes and naturally welcome feedback
on them as we work on it, please raise your voice now because probably
another breaking change is not possible any more in future!

Tom
