RE: [dsdp-pmc] FW: Requirements Council - Themese for embedded

Hi,

I agree with DougS that we need to have a sense for common workflows that we can support with ready-made exemplary tools. A problem may be that embedded devices may vary greatly. I'd see the biggest chances for "commonly used" devices with
  • embedded linux
  • mobile java
  • gdb based debugging (gdbserver; are there drivers for running gdb on jtag debuggers?)
For things like Flash programming I guess it's more difficult since the types of hardware vary greatly.

Another need I see for Eclipse is to come up with a better model for searching and installing plugins. Something linke the Linux package installers (yum, apt, ...) that can search online repositories. But I guess that's more for the Platform and not so much for DSDP (though somebody mentioned it on the eclipse.dsdp newsgroup).

Cheers,
Martin

Certainly I think it is important for Europa that we have our first set of frameworks and exemplary tools that improve support embedded development and to further enable ISV’s delivering tools for the embedded market. But, that’s probably obvious.

We’ve talked a lot about frameworks so far in the DSDP. We should probably have a sense of the common workflows we want to support with the exemplary tools. Embedded Linux is a hot topic, or maybe a simple roll your own embedded image support would fit the bill. What I’m really hoping for is to have a minimal set of functionality at Eclipse that is flashy enough that we can take to the press and trade shows to show off Eclipse’s embedded development support. Frameworks are important for vendor customization and need to be in the requirements as well. But to really get that home run with the press, we need to show something end user consumable in the open.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Hi DSDP PMC and Doug S,

At the requirements council tomorrow, we’re going to work on the Themes and Priorities for the next Eclipse release.  I know a couple of you will be there, but I wanted to ping the whole group to see if there are some items you’d like to add to the embedded section:

I’ll work on some things for DD.  For the rest of you, perhaps you might want to put a few high-level bullet items for your various embedded / mobile projects.

Doug G
