[cross-project-issues-dev] How to deal with Gerrit changes with outdated

In Gerrit we have some old changes from developers that originally had a valid ECA, but which expired in the meantime. Since Gerrit changes might stay for years this will be a situation that we might face more often by time.

How could we handle such changes if we want to pick the work up? The original change was done by an author that has no valid ECA anymore. But we may want to pick up his/her work and make the change ready for merging.

Gerrit refuses to push the modified change. Even when we add a committer with „Signed-by/Also-by“. Removing the original author is AFAIC wrong.

What is the process to make those changes valid?
