when entering the blank I got 500. Then I clicked continue, after that I could continue typing and the search worked.

Though this still looks like a bug. We should upgrade to a more recent version (we run 2.11.2 latest release is 2.13.6).

Upgrading Gerrit (and Bugzilla, and MediaWiki) is on our to-do list for Apr-Jun timeframe.
