Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] The PermGen problem

Bug 265525 is about heap space. We did increase the heap space across all platforms in 4.2 release (see bug 373679).

However Ed is talking about permgen memory, and in particular he is talking about the case of launching a nested Eclipse. This is a very difficult problem to solve and there has been investigation on it over the past few months. I won't bore this list with the details, but please see this bug if you are interested (and ideas are welcome):

John

PS - Ed, I agree with you, I don't know why the JDK vendor continues to ship the JDK in a form that is not usable out of the box as applications get more demanding...

Ed,

Perhaps it's time to revisit the default settings with a new enhancement request?

Here's mine from a couple of years ago -- after much discussion the community arrived at the solution to up the Mac 64 bit settings but not other ones, don't know if this has changed subsequently..

Hi

RC2: Just suffered from launching a nested Eclipse with an inadequate PermGen and the usual UI lockouts and need to kill Eclipse.

Why are we still shipping a product that is increasingly unuseable out of the box as applications get more demanding?

It irritates me and I know what I'm doing. It's clear from newsgroups that users have trouble too. It's just not user friendly.
