[cosmos-dev] IBM JRE on Windows

The download page specifies a requirement for IBM hardware and it doesn't mention Lenovo. 

 

Google found this statement about IBM JVMs on IBM developerworks:

 

"...remember that we can only supply these to be used on IBM branded hardware that was created before the sale to Lenovo"

 

I infer that the current market share of hardware capable of running the IBM JVM for Windows is precisely zero.

    Is it correct to conclude that the IBM JRE only runs on Lenovo PCs?

 

    If so, since Lenovo has about 7% of the PC market share, I would agree that we should test with the JRE that the other 93% of the market probably is using for Windows.

I use IBM JVMs on various platforms including Linux on x86 and x86-64 (but not Windows) and I have never encountered an artificial hardware restriction.

 

IBM no longer produces hardware that runs Windows, so perhaps we should reevaluate whether we need to test the IBM JVM for Windows if it is limited to IBM hardware.  It might save some test time if we only test Sun JVMs on Windows and IBM JVMs on Linux.

 

Any thoughts or objections?

IBM JRE installs just fine on my linux box, which is some kind of Dell hardware.
