Let me know what you think about this. I realise having to add checks to 
the Monitor interface at suitable points during the long running tasks is 
somewhat invasive, but I believe the value of a responsive UI makes it 
worthwhile.

Note for full responsiveness throughout the complete concern model 
building process, one additional patch to the conman project is also 
required, which I have sent out separately.
