[cdt-dev] Long command lines generated by the makefile generator causes build errors

This is an old issue that we have been running with an internal fix for, but as we would like to upstream it, it needs to be more general than what we have in our product.

I see that there are a few possibilities on how to implement this, but I’d like to know what the community prefers.
