Re: [cdt-dev] LaunchBar update

+1
I think this is shaping up to be a really great feature and it should not be rushed, especially for a maintenance release.

Looking forward to the Mars release.

Subject: [cdt-dev] LaunchBar update

Hey gang, we had a good discussion at the CDT call and as I try to work towards getting the LaunchBar to use a new proposed and more flexible API for org.eclipse.remote, I’m finding that it’s really not ready for prime time yet. Whatever I do for CDT 8.6 (Luna SR-2) is going to change as I get that API refined and pushed upstream in Mars. Releasing a 1.0 and then changing the API 4 months later isn’t fair to the community.

So as a result, I’d like to NOT release the LaunchBar in Luna and focus on releasing it in Mars with a CDT Remote Launch based on o.e.remote (especially SSH) that gives us an exemplary implementation of everything to show it off.

For those that are using the launch bar now, I will continue to do builds and will keep the master branch free of the o.e.remote work until the new API is in place. I can tag the last build that works against Luna as a milestone for adopters to grab if they need (we at QNX will continue to use the Luna version for a few weeks as well).

Let me know if you have any concerns, questions, or things you’d like me to do.

Part of the reasoning behind this is that I’m totally excited about what’s happening with the Target Management project. Greg Watson and I are working towards getting org.eclipse.remote there as a foundation and make sure the Terminal works well with it and then grow the services and UI to make a really nice and simple target management framework. I encourage anyone who’s interested to follow the tm-dev list. There’s some great discussion going on right now.

Thanks,
Doug.
