RE: [cdt-dev] horrified at new experience

Jack, can you please give me some instructions on how to reproduce the problems you encounter? I'd like to try it out.

CDT should not have dependencies on any modelling projects as far as I know. And yes, p2 is supposed to calculate and pull in all dependencies for you from any of its known sources/update sites.

It may be something to do with the modules selected under the CDT, but yeah, p2 has definitely not made it easier to figure out what is truly needed. I really haven’t looked into p2 yet. Is it supposed to handle dependencies automatically?

Ummm.... CDT requiring EMF is news to me... although this is the second time this week I've heard someone say this... I think there is something going haywire with p2.

Anybody have any idea about this?

First, please recognize that I am a fan of the CDT and all the work that has been done on it to date. Unfortunately, I need to send some criticism and I hope you won’t take it too harshly.

I’ve been using Eclipse and the CDT for a couple of years now and I have to say that my recent experience absolutely horrified me. The CDT used to be very simple to install as it used very few additional frameworks, but now you have incorporated all of these new modeling frameworks. I understand the need for using these new frameworks, but there is no indication on the CDT site about the dependencies and you don’t find out about them until you go to install the CDT. The last two Eclipse versions had the same problem, but I didn’t see the need to complain because it was easy enough to find the MDT modules and EMF. Unfortunately, it’s getting worse. The CDT FAQ refers to installation instructions that are only as recent as 2004 and don’t indicate any need for these prerequisite installs. I guarantee you people are walking away from the CDT and Eclipse C/C++ development as an IDE as a result. Someone really needs to consider making the installation process easier and an update to the FAQ is long past due.
