RE: Plans for HEAD, was Re: [cdt-dev] CDT 5.0.0 available

I'd say stay with 5.1. I think we need to start getting in the habbit of
managing our APIs better, even through architectural change. But at the
same time, I don't think we need to be as strict with controlling API
change as the Platform is. We have a relatively small community and as
long as we're keeping them informed, we can manage change. As long as we
don't go hog wild and change everything.

We've always operated that way, but even less controlled in the past,
and I never got the impression from the community that it has been an
issue. It will be as the number of plugin providers grows so we need to
start being more careful going forward.

The other side of this question is, was CDT 5.0 really justified as a
major version. I had hopes that we'd get more aggressive at defining our
APIs and cleaning them up. I don't think that happened. I'd rather go
back in time and renumber it as 4.1 and then use 5.0 for this next
release. But then, will I be saying the samething next year?

Anyway, that's just my opinion. I'd like to hear from the other
committers what they think. How much API change are you planning for the
next release? I think the ICProjectDescriptor and friends will change
dramatically, but then I'm not sure that'll impact anyone.

Doug.

So this is a good question...

Is the next release on HEAD going to be a 5.1 or a 6.0? It seems
to me that we still have a ways to go on API, and while we're getting
closer, I think we'll end up breaking it this year. Especially for the
build system.

	Thoughts?

So head now is 5.1 and 5.0.1 would be on cdt_5_0?
