Responding to a problem from 2005 is 
probably moot, but just in case someone
else runs into this.....

I too had the "can't write .fileTableLock".  It
seems I accidentally changed the owner 
of /usr/share/eclipse when using "tar" to 
put cdt into that directory (and the ownership
of some of the stuff in there).  Getting the
ownership write seemed to get eclipse to
behave properly.
