Thank you for your help bob your instructions are very clear

 

I checked out the BPEL source code into my workspace, and  remove the bundle-version dependency for org.eclipse.ui.console

Now how can I verify that the Designer still compiles and works with the 3.4.0 version of org.eclipse.ui.console

Do I have to run the project as an Eclipse application or how

Open the "CVS View" in your eclipse workbench, and create a new repository (see attached screenshot). Next, navigate to org.eclipse.bpel/plugins in the repository viewer, select all of the org.eclipse.bpel folders and right-click -> Check Out.

 I use a standalone version of Eclipse  3.5.2 which  provides several plugins for model transformation  so I do not have to switch to Eclipse 3.6

So how can I check the sources of the BPEL Designer.

No. That would make your installation unstable.
I'm afraid you won't have the choice, you will have to move on Helios (Eclipse 3.6).
Maybe your other plugin could be migrated on Helios?

Or you could check out the sources of the BPEL Designer.
I don't know if the console 3.5 is really required, in which case the minimal version could be changed.
