Re: Improving Build and Debug Instructions ( was Re: [birt-dev] Eclipse BIRT PMC Meeting Minutes - Monday, January 22, 2007)

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the response.  Is it possible to make the location of the CVS repository public so I can check it out?
Also, if any documentation about how to build it is available, the location of that as well?

Regards,

Susan

Susan,

Good points.

Currently committers do look at the wiki and the website.  Although the FAQ needs revising.  The website is stored in CVS.  Requests to change are handled through bugzilla.  Wiki pages are not under source control.

Hi All,

I was delighted to hear that additional information will be put on the web site too that will help developers
who are new to BIRT.  The mylar site is organized very nicely - maybe we can use some of the ideas from this site for the BIRT web site.

Here are my thoughts about the "good" stuff from the mylar site, that I would love to see on the BIRT web site (and would be willing to help with):

I really like (alot!) the level/categories of organization they have in the left frame.  Especially the division between Users and Developers.  Currently I have a hard time navigating the BIRT site in terms of finding information that is specific to developers, and for instance, on the BIRT site, the Sample Database is given the highest level category - this seems unnecessary.

The Developer info from this page points directly to the wiki - this is great!  Since development info sometimes changes frequently, it's nice for it to be an easily updatable place like the wiki.

is outstanding - really clear about what to do as a new contributor, and I love the Contributors and Committers section.

I like the preface, and I think we as a development community, can learn from it:

"We recommend that those interested in integrating Mylar email mylar-dev@xxxxxxxxxxx regarding for pointers to examples and guidance on upcoming changes. We encourage integrators to take the "act now, apologize later" approach to adding and updating wiki documentation. Committers review all changes and will update them as needed."

One of the things that I like about the BIRT wiki is that anyone can add to it - one of the things that concerns me is the quality of the instructions and examples, and wondering if some entries are reviewed by someone who is really knowledgeable and keeping them up to date.  Are BIRT committers reviewing these examples now?

The three sections are great - New Bugs, Queries and Voting.
By putting the Voting link right on this page it gives more power to the BIRT community in determining what gets into each release.

Finally, this leads me to my last comment.  If a contributor wants to make a contribution to the BIRT web site are these files checked into CVS or some other repository?  For instance, I have worked on another open source project where all web site source files can be checked out and built on a local host, in this case, using Forrest.  This ensures that pages added don't "break" the web site.

Can someone explain how this is done now?  And if someone from the community wants to contribute a page and there is no build environment what format the contribution should be in?  Should a bugzilla be filed?

Regards,

Susan

+1.  This is great news.  Thanks very much for working to address this
issue.

Maybe an open discussion on the developer (birt-dev) list will help to
get ideas /suggestions from the development community.

I found the mylar project at eclipse has a nice contributing page off
their main website .   http://www.eclipse.org/mylar/start.php
The contributing page gives detailed instructions on build, running
tests, how to contribute  and submit patches, whats the minimum
requirement etc
I think if such information is provided for BIRT, it will be very
helpful for any potential  developer who may be interested in
contributing to BIRT.

Thoughts/comments ?

Thanks.
Sunitha.
