Meeting Logistics
Due to vacation, Scott Rosenbaum did not attend this week.
Also, the meeting was brief this week since Paul Clenahan was leaving for a flight.
BIRT and Non-Eclipse Downloads
A problem area for BIRT right now is the download and installation process. In particular, the fact that there are a number of 3rd party downloads that cannot be distributed from the eclipse.org site due to licensing differences from EPL.
The WTP project faces similar challenges, so Arthur Ryman joined us for this BIRT PMC meeting to discuss how the WTP project is approaching this problem.
Net is that the WTP project is proposing creating Update Manager sites at SourceForge, Apache, etc. that will provide a mechanism to download the needed non-Eclipse projects from those communities. Each Eclipse project would then create a "Feature" that wraps this and provides a convenient way for the users to download the needed non-Eclipse project code. Arthur is referring to these as "wormholes".
The BIRT PMC is interested in this kind of approach and will consider this as we think about how we will make the BIRT installation process easier.
