[babel-dev] Should empty translation string be saved?

Trying to resolve "[Bug 299049] Cannot set a translation to the empty string"...
which mentions "[Bug 217257] Empty translation string should not be saved".

Denis, Gabe, or Jacek, do we recall the reason why we don't want to save an empty string? Was it just a space wasting issue?

And, to all audiences, will reverting [Bug 217257] (meaning to be able to save an empty string) cause problems you can think of?
