Paul, do you have a link to that patent, or a patent number ? I am a complete n00b with patents.
Maybe we could discuss this on the call tonight ? There is a Babel dev call at 10am PDT every Monday.

One thing that I need to point out, however, is that we have filed a patent on some of the ways in which we generate documentation based on dynamic content. I am discussing this with my legal in terms of discussions, but the Babel group might also want to decide how they'd like to proceed.

Everyone, I contacted Aptana, and in particular Ingo who was recommended to me by Martin from the AC, as Martin linked me to an old blog post from Bjorn showing how awesome the Aptana help system is.
Paul, what is the current state of that piece of software ? It is open source ? Would you consider open sourcing it ? Would you be ok to give access to it to the Eclipse Foundation so people can translate the help system that way ?

I'll help as best I can with information about the help system I built, though I no longer work at Aptana. I've cc'd Paul as a contact at Aptana. He'll be better able to answer questions about if/how Aptana can assist directly. We also built the system which was the inspiration for the Babel project, which we use to provide translations for text strings used within the actual application interface.
Our help system is based on MediaWiki. As part of the build process for Aptana Studio, we crawl the wiki, translating the index page into an Eclipse-formatted TOC XML file. We then pull the content from each individual page and inject it into a new help-system-specific HMTL file, and link that to the TOC. All of these files are then bundled into our help system .jar that is shipped with Aptana Studio. Currently, we do not translate the content on the wiki, thought that could certainly be done. In your particular case, as translations are the most important part, most of the success with this method depends on how well the wiki software you use handles translations. For MediaWiki, it appears that there is mostly manual linking between different languages. Other wiki software might facilitate keeping the translations linked and in sync. Assuming you have a some way of crawling a language-specific version of the help wiki, this mechanism should work well.
