Hi Dave,
Thanks a lot for your detailed
explanation. I apologize for the late reply.
I am interested in Simulators. It would be
great if you can share the details about the work that is already completed and
how to extend the existing framework for new devices. Also please let me know
the list of devices that you look for in short time. In this case, I hope you
will be sharing the specification that details the requirements that should be
met by the simulated device. Basically I am looking for functional
specification which details how the simulated device should work and expected
operations list with expected results.
It would be really nice if you can share
any design documents that would make me to understand more about the device
simulation framework.
Thanks,
Vijay S.

A
major issue in development and testing of Storage Resource Management systems
is the availability of test hardware. CPUs may be cheap and plentiful these
days, but intelligent, high capacity storage subsystems and fiber channel
switches are still premium devices. This is a particular problem in open source
development where individual developers and their respective institutions may
not have the resources to obtain access to expensive gadgets.
My
vision is a completely self contained simulated SAN environment suitable for
development and testing in a purely virtual setting. Such a setup would be
suitable for unit testing, pre-checkin smoke testing, and nightly build testing
via an automated test suite.
The
elements of such a system would be as follows:
1)
simulated SMI-S devices (providers) created via a device simulation framework
capable of capturing the state of an existing device or creating a device 'from
scratch' via a specification language. This is in the works already, but work
is needed to add more devices, etc.
2)
Simulated in-band and out-of-band devices and a fully simulated SAN
topology. This would build upon and work in addition to the SMI-S device
simulator to provide a complete end-to-end simulation for topology and datapath
analysis.
3)
For automated testing: 'headless' install, and a test harness for running and
analyzing test results unattended
4)
A fully functioning CLI to drive the product through its major capabilities
without the GUI.
And,
of course, a battery of tests to run in that test harness. Three sets I think:
1) quick smoke test for verification, 2) Nightly test 2-3 hours worth, 3) Stress
and/or comprehensive test 24-48 hours worth.

Hi Dave,
Thanks a lot for the prompt reply. Please have a look at my
clarification inline.
I would like to understand more about the requirements of
Storage Network Environment Simulator and Automated Testing environment.
Thanks,
Vijay S.

Subject: Re: [aperi-news] Query about academic project ideas
Hi Vijay,
With respect to the web page: http://www.eclipse.org/aperi/Community-Building/Aperi_Academic_Project_Ideas.htm
and to answer your questions:
1) [What are all the eligibility criteria for taking up a
project?] Any one who has the interest and sufficient resources to participate
is welcome to work on these projects.
2) [What is the expected duration of contribution?] Depends on the scope,
complexity, and pervasiveness of the contribution. As with any open source
project we welcome on going support.
3) [How Aperi Project will provide a certificate for the contribution?]
Like other Eclipse projects, Aperi does not have a certification program.
We are friendly with SNIA which does offer certifications for storage
administration. Seehttp://www.snia.org/education/certification/ for more info.
Is this the sort of certification you meant?
[Vijay] No. I am aware of the SNIA certification programs and
am SCP 2006 certified. The certificate I meant is like a participation
certificate in Aperi’s program.
4) [Is the listed projects all are started or yet to start?] Only the Storage
Network Environment Simulator has any tangible work started. We are planning on
offering a donation from IBM Research for a basic CIM device simulator under
the Aperi project banner. This is 'just' a basic device simulator. Stitching it
into a full blown SAN environment simulation and hooking that up with an
automated testing environment is still work to be done.
5) [Is any new suggestion welcomed?] Absolutely! Bring them on.
I hope that answers your questions. Please feel free to contact us for any
further information or to get started on any projects with us...

[aperi-news] Query about academic project
ideas
|
|
Hi All,
I would like to get some details about Academic Project ideas. I am posting
this mail for my cousin who is studying Bachelor of Engineering in Computer
Science. The details I would like to know are:
1. What are all the eligibility
criteria for taking up a project?
2. What is the expected duration of
contribution?
3. How Aperi Project will provide a
certificate for the contribution. Kindly note that certificate might be primary
for some colleges.
4. Is the listed projects all are
started or yet to start?
5. Is any new suggestion welcomed?
Please let me the answers as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Vijay S.
