Re: [aperi-dev] Fwd: FW: Query about academic project ideas

Hi Brenda,

I was thinking of the exact scenario you mentioned - to build snapshot of
available CIM agents available in the university. Vijay had mentioned
earlier about his team not having access to any SAN/NAS devices. So, this
option does not work out.

Regarding complex test scenario : Vijay and his team can use the
configuration based approach to build simulated SAN (interconnection of
Storage Subsystems and Fiber channel switches). Creation of a complex
stress test case scenario and then verify topology using Aperi or other
mechanism can be an option.

Another option could be to setup a Linux server in the university and
deploy SBLIM CIM agent (
http://www.sblim.org/ ). Then, use SAN Simulator
to simulate this server CIM agent using snapshot and configuration
approach.

Hi Vijay,   I wanted to share a few impressions or ideas from my point of
view.

One idea might be to ask your students to focus on devices that you have
within the university environment.  Do you have access within your
university labs to any NAS, storage arrays or storage switches?   It might
help to share with us any devices you might have access to so we can
comment if there are any restrictions in using those devices with the Aperi
framework or the San  Simulator.     Your students might be able to build a
repository of SAN Simulator images for those devices.  You would follow the
directions provided for creating such images.  Ramani, do we call those
device 'profiles'?    Your team may also be able to help us improve the
documentation they use in this process.

You could try to test these device profiles against the Aperi framework,
that would also give your team experience downloading and setting up Aperi.
Provide the Aperi community your feedback (submit bugs or tell us it
worked !).       What operating system would you consider for running
Aperi?   We have the majority of our team focused on windows but you have
probably noticed the Novell Linux work and there is also Dale's efforts to
get Aperi running on Solaris.  The more new environments we encounter with
Aperi the better the code will get with feedback.

I think there is also an idea of assembling the specific device 'profiles'
into a more complex test scenario.   Ramani, can you comment on the work
involved with this aspect?  I suspect the IBM team will probably have some
base 'profiles' to contribute  but more effort would be valuable in
extending this individual profiles into complex and higher stress test
scenarios.

One last idea, is to have your students engage with a vendor who is not
currently participating in Aperi to build a simulation 'profile' for their
device. Are there any storage vendors that have relationships with your
university that might be interested in helping too?

Hi All,

I am looking for a good Academic project that would give good fruits to
Aperi. I had a look into the academic projects listed in the Aperi site and
was talking to few people in the group. Though I got good replies and data
points, I would like to roll this out in the main mailing list to get a
greater access to all folks who are involved in Aperi project.

Kindly note that the project duration is of four month and the people who
are going to develop the project have very minimal exposure to SAN /
Storage domain. Currently they are reading about SAN, Storage Management
technologies (CIM/WBEM). I am guiding them in understanding the SAN,
various technologies of Storage Management, etc.

It would be of great help and support for us if you can help to move
forward.

I have attached the entire mail thread from the very beginning below for
your reference.

Thanks,
Vijay S.

Hi Vijay,
let's keep this conversation rolling on the main mailing list.  In that
way, you'll have greater access to folks that can help your project.
Perhaps you can re-introduce your situation in an email to.  Then we can go
from there.  I spoke with the Aperi team lead, and this was his feedback to

Hi Ramani Routray,

Thanks a lot. I understand your concerns. If I understand correctly,
there
are some devices needed to be simulated. Is simulation here means a
device
simulator and a provider. Is it possible to write simulators by
understanding the device functionalities? If yes, then I may need the
functional specification of the device.

It would be great if you can share the list of devices that you are
planning to simulate. I believe small devices/softwares like iSCSI
Target
and Initiator can be simulated easily with out a real device in place.
Here
are some of the probables which you may be interested.
1. Implementation of a SMIS profile like Server, HBA, iSCSI target, only
if
they are not in place already.
2. Implementation of DMTF profiles like Software Inventory, Asset, etc.
3. Any work with SMASH / XAM.

Kindly note that I have very little knowledge in SAN Simulator / ISAN
and
also in Aperi project. I am bit worried whether the above list may suit
Aperi/ISAN or not. Also I have prepared this list keeping in mind that
we
have little time as the project period. But these guys are really
interested and willing to extend their work and share their time even
after
the closure of the project period.

I welcome if you can suggest us any other projects, just in case that we
need the SAN devices in place for this project.

I would request you to share the device agent that you are referring in
your mail. This would help them to understand more about their work.

Thanks,
Vijay S.

Since, you don't have access to storage hardware - I am not sure, what

Hi Vijay,

Based on your description, what I understand is : you would like to
guide
the final year project based Aperi SAN Simulator for three undergrad
BTech
students. We would be happy to collaborate and get you started. Just
wanted
to check few things from you.

    - What would your project timeline (start and end time) ?
[Vijay] Actually the project period is of 3-4 months that spans
between dec to march end. But their department feels it as short time to
do a project so they are starting well ahead. They want
to decide the project and the design. So in this case, timeline starts
next
week and ends by Jan end (Possibly this can extend to
Feb 2 week, if required. But I cant guarantee that as of now).

    - Will you have access to any real SAN or Storage Subsystem ?
[Vijay] No. They dont have any real SAN or Storage subsystem.

    - Do the students have basic background of SAN, Storage
Management, CIM, WBEM etc.. ?
[Vijay]. No. Actually I have started guiding them and teaching
all these technologies. The process is on its way.

them
to go for it. Now they are in way of getting a go ahead from their

the device name at least which needs to be simulated. They have a
limited

are two documents about the SAN Simulator.  We welcome participation:

The code has just been donated from IBM to the Aperi open source
community.  Therefore, we will spend the next few weeks getting the code
incorporated into the community.  The best way for you to participate is
to sign up for the development forum and begin chiming in on the
discussions.  From here, we can get you more and more involved.  Yes, we
do need support for additional devices.

Here is how to get involved on the development forum:

A major issue in development and testing of Storage Resource Management
systems is the availability of test hardware. CPUs may be cheap and
plentiful these days, but intelligent, high capacity storage subsystems
and fiber channel switches are still premium devices. This is a
particular
problem in open source development where individual developers and their
respective institutions may not have the resources to obtain access to
expensive gadgets.

My vision is a completely self contained simulated SAN environment
suitable for development and testing in a purely virtual setting. Such a
setup would be suitable for unit testing, pre-checkin smoke testing, and
nightly build testing via an automated test suite.

The elements of such a system would be as follows:
1) simulated SMI-S devices (providers) created via a device simulation
framework capable of capturing the state of an existing device or
creating
a device 'from scratch' via a specification language. This is in the
works
already, but work is needed to add more devices, etc.
2) Simulated in-band and out-of-band devices and a fully simulated SAN
topology. This would build upon and work in addition to the SMI-S device
simulator to provide a complete end-to-end simulation for topology and
datapath analysis.
3) For automated testing: 'headless' install, and a test harness for
running and analyzing test results unattended
4) A fully functioning CLI to drive the product through its major
capabilities without the GUI.

And, of course, a battery of tests to run in that test harness. Three
sets
I think: 1) quick smoke test for verification, 2) Nightly test 2-3 hours
worth, 3) Stress and/or comprehensive test 24-48 hours worth.

Subject: Re: [aperi-news] Query about academic project ideas

Hi Vijay,

With respect to the web page:
http://www.eclipse.org/aperi/Community-Building/Aperi_Academic_Project_I
deas.htm.

and to answer your questions:

1) [What are all the eligibility criteria for taking up a project?] Any
one who has the interest and sufficient resources to participate is
welcome to work on these projects.

2) [What is the expected duration of contribution?] Depends on the
scope,
complexity, and pervasiveness of the contribution. As with any open
source
project we welcome on going support.

3) [How Aperi Project will provide a certificate for the contribution?]
Like other Eclipse projects, Aperi does not have a certification
program.
We are friendly with SNIA which does offer certifications for storage
administration. Seehttp://www.snia.org/education/certification/ for more
info. Is this the sort of certification you meant?
[Vijay] No. I am aware of the SNIA certification programs and am SCP
2006
certified. The certificate I meant is like a participation certificate
in
Aperi?s program.

4) [Is the listed projects all are started or yet to start?] Only the
Storage Net work Environment Simulator has any tangible work started. We
are planning on offering a donation from IBM Research for a basic CIM
device simulator under the Aperi project banner. This is 'just' a basic
device simulator. Stitching it into a full blown SAN environment
simulation and hooking that up with an automated testing environment is
still work to be done.

5) [Is any new suggestion welcomed?] Absolutely! Bring them on.

I hope that answers your questions. Please feel free to contact us for
any
further information or to get started on any projects with us...
