It is with regret that we are announcing the termination of the Eclipse ALF project.  The termination review will be held this Wednesday (see the Eclipse Review schedule and announcement, pasted below.)  The call-in numbers can be found on the Eclipse MyFoundation portal pages.
 
The reason for archiving the project is a lack of particiation by organizations or individuals other than those of Serena Software.  While we have been enhancing the code up to the present, there has simply not been sufficient community interest to justify continuing the project as a community activity.
 
Some notes to those with continuing interest:
 
1. The code, website, WIKI, and mailing lists will be archived and will be available for download from Eclipse.
 
2. A major subsystem of ALF is the ALF SSO (Single SignOn) and we are coordinating with the Eclipse Higgins project to contribute that code and continue to develop that code as part of the Higgins project.  Given the synergies of the ALF SSO code with the Higgins components and its focus on identity and authentication, Eclipse Higgins is a natural venue to continue enhancing that code, and we encourage you to take a look at the Higgins project before and after we contribute the SSO components to Higgins.
 
3. The project may be restarted in the future, should there be sufficient interest.
 
4. The ALF project components have been consumed by a commercial product, Serena Business Mashups, and their functionality will continue to be available on a commercial basis from Serema Software as part of that project.
 
We thank all those who have contributed their time, ideas, energy, code, bugs and enhancements to the project.

Below is the schedule of upcoming project reviews. Review Calls take place only if an Eclipse member, using the project's Communication Channel (given below), requests that the call be held. Otherwise, the EMO will decide the outcome of the review based on the docuware and community feedback.

The request for the review call must be posted at least 24 hours before the scheduled review time. As the ALF project lead, I am personnally saddened to be recommending
closing a project that created commercially viable platform,
I, too, am pleased that ALF has spawned some commercially viable projects - that's great. The archiving is due to a lack of open source project activity rather than a lack of commercial uptake.

Not sure if this means you got all your questions answered but just to priovide some clarity
 
The ALF plugin allows you to create an deploy ALF-Event action maps.   If does not create service flows themselves.  You must create and deploy a service flow using BPEL or some other web service tool.  BPEL is the recommended approach for this but in fact any implmentation of the ServiceFlow service could be used.
 
An ALF Event is essentially defined by its WSDL so you cannot raise event using an entirely different WSDL.  The main point to the Event Manager is to provide a common interface that all tools can use to emit events.  If you like, it is the problem ALF solves.  That said you can create derived events an place additional data in the event.  There are two elements provided for the <Detail> and <Extension> , <Detail is intended for "vocabulary" defined data commonly defined across tools and <Extension> is intended for Tool specific or arbitrary data.   In either case you can create a derived schema to declare a specific Service Flow WSDL that can be used to hanlde your specifc event definition. This is described in th ALF wiki

Because Service Flows are defined using RPC literal it is possible to handle you event either as a base event of a fully defined derived event.   As you spotted, the purpose of the Service Flow is to deal with mapping of data between the event and any service you want to invoke as a result.
