The url provided by Erich (http://download.eclipse.org/updates) is redirected to http://update.eclipse.org/updates, which is already used as the update url. Jim, I don't have access to the feature projects, but what is needed, is for every eclipse feature (particularly for sdk, platform, jdt, pde) to add the discovery url, next to the update url: <url> <update url="http://update.eclipse.org/updates" label="%updateSiteName" /> <discovery url="http://update.eclipse.org/updates" label="%updateSiteName" /> </url> Now, that update site (http://download.eclipse.org/updates) contains all the drivers since 2.0) so it is not very useful for 3.0. The recommended way is for each major release to have its own update site, especially as the update manager cannot update from 2.x to 3.x. So, if not much trouble, we could change the above url's to be http://update.eclipse.org/update/3.0/ instead. That would make the look up faster, and will show less clutter in the results page in the install wizard. Thoughts ? +1 from me Created attachment 11093 [details]

patch to o.e.jdt.source-feature/feature.xml
Dani, This is the last one.
The o.e.platform.source and o.e.jdt.source features and plugins are generated at build time for the 3.0 stream. Adding Pascal to cc: for comment to determine if PDE Build needs any changes. Re comment 3: patch applied (>= I200405260800) Re comment 9: not done since this project is no longer in use (auto-generated) The generated source feature are missing the discovery entry. I entered bug #64109 to capture this problem. The bug #64109 has just been fixed. The next I build will contain the change in PDE Build. To get the proper value in the generated feature Sonia will have to update to the coming version of pde build. This bug is targeted for RC1, so I wonder what else is needed. Sonia, have you had a chance to update to the PDE Build that has Pascal's fix? Currently, the site does not contain anything. Should we put any features/patches there? Perhaps the Core Tools, or JDT's Cheetah patch, etc. ? Not just yet. I believe this will have to be deferred to RC2 once we have had a chance to fully test the new pde build. We intend to move to it after RC1 is declared. Pascal's fix has been successfully tested in I200405290105. Have moved to this for builds > 20040529. [I am a new user to eclipse. I've planned to start my first java project on 2004-06-01.] Possibly this "new user perspective" can help you a little: As a user, I would expect the following behaviour: Update sites should be entered as "www.eclipse.org" or "eclipse.org" (not "update.eclipse.org/update", where "update" ocours twice, which is btw. redundant). [eclipse can still internally switch to "update.eclipse.org/update" or "update.eclipse.org/update3.0" etc.! but a user can only enter "eclipse.org"] All main eclipse features, which are described on eclipse.org should be reachable from the "Search for new features to install" Perspective (GEF, SWT, EMF, CDP, ...), thus a user can quickly select an download the basic installation he wants. - Please review this 2 messages / threads on the newsgroup. Remember, this is what i got after download and install - an immediate disappointment about the automatisms provided by eclipse. The "serverity" of such intro/update-related bugs should be "major" [personally, I would define them as "blocker", cause they can 'block' people to use eclipse!] news://news.eclipse.org/c967do$crt$1@eclipse.org news://news.eclipse.org/c9601g$543$1@eclipse.org - Hope you can gain some value out of my writings. Regarding comment# 14 >Currently, the site does not contain anything. Should we put any >features/patches there? Perhaps the Core Tools, or JDT's Cheetah patch, etc. ? yes Cheetah should show up there - I've CCed Philippe. This at least gives us a start. Hello All, Sorry but I am new to Eclipse. Did I miss something that updates for 3.0 are unavaible using the Eclipse IDE or something to that affect? Can't seem to use the check for updates IDE option: Menu /Help/Software Updates/Find and Install I have a log export for this particular error. A person in the news.eclipse.org/ecipse.platform sugested that I add this inof to this bug possibly because I am using java.version=1.5.0-beta. Also because of the eclipse.buildId=I200405260010.
