I export the preferences from my workspace. I have checked "Insert spaces for tabs". This is exported in the XML like

/instance/org.eclipse.ui.editors/spacesForTabs=true 

After our project meeting we agreed to change it to the defaults. I export the settings which misses this setting.

The import doesn't change the setting back - most likely since the export is missing it.

After changing the default settings I would assume that the import reverts the default settings although not set in the export.
