The detail area in the variables view should be configurable as vertical or 
horizaontally split. See the class hierachy view as an example (triangle menu 
allows configuration)

As detailed in the spec for this feature, this is controlled via a preference 
in the debug preference page.

OK. This feels sufficient - we will leave as a preference for now, and see if 
any users require the functionality in the actual viewer.
