The "Abbreviate Package Names" preference section gives the impression of a "least effort solution to configure how package names are abbreviated".

Which is fine for a start and I understand that there may not be the resources available to change that, however, I still would like to share my thoughts on this UI here:

* I find the explanation above the text entry field hard to read: three lines of dense text with many punctuation marks.

* the Tab key does enter an unintended tab character in the text instead of traversing to the next field.

* the text entry field shows (disabled) scroll-bars even though the text does not exceed the control's bounds.

Maybe an editable table with two columns would be better suited for entering package name abbreviations? Each column could clearly state what to enter, e.g. "Package Name" and "Abbreviation".
