Bug 47600 describes a scenario where a plugin developer wants to reuse an 
existing editor because it is very expensive to open.

She currently needs to resort to a hack whereby an external editor is temporary 
flipped to being an internal editor, then back.  See bug 47600 for more details.

The Workbench should provide better support for this.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.
