It would be great to have a reminder of what certain icons mean in Eclipse's Project Explorer (one way to do this would be to, upon hovering mouse over an icon, display a tool tip that would display information found, for example, at http://help.eclipse.org/luna/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclipse.jdt.doc.user/reference/ref-icons.htm).

In reviewing 'Window | Preferences', could the above be implemented as an additional checkbox in 'General | Appearance | Label Decorations'?  This would entail "expanding" the current definition of label decorations (viz., "Decorators give you more information about an item, at the expense of visual clutter.")

Or would it need to be a separate entry because the enhancement is for a tool tip (not a label decoration which also visual adds text)?
