This is a feature request.  It's not clear if you make  a distinction between bug and feature requests. (pardon if I'm in the wrong place)

I am a new user from NetBeans where if you select text and press a left parens, or a quote, the selected text is quoted.  Eclipse replaces the selected text with the new quotes.  It would be nice to have a preference for this feature.

2.Press the ' key.

Note that in the Java editor, it can insert the closing quotes automatically, e.g. type
"foo
to get
"foo".

For the Java editor you can also add a template, e.g. "${word_selection}" which can be used to quote the selection.


Is this request for all editors or just the Java editor?

I like the idea. The behavior should be available only in Java and XML editors though.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
