An interesting suggestion posted on EC by Michael Scharf on 9/25/01 10:21pm

In sniff+ we use the metapher of "pinning" tools. Unless you pin
an editor, new files will be shown in the unpinned editor. If the
file is not saved (in the current unpinned editor), you will be 
asked. If you have a pinned editor showing the file, this editor 
will pop in front.

In general, there could be a (customizable) reuse strategy for each
editor type....

A button was added to the toolbar.
If a number of editors are opened a editors will be reused (activation order) 
unless this editor is pinned.
