More information:
This is a feature request that came out of what I thought was a bug (216578).

The feature request is to give the user the option to auto-collapse folders as you move between opened files that are in different directories.

By default, Eclipse has the "Link Open Editors in Navigator" option off by default. Personally, I think this should be turned ON by default and disabled if a user finds it annoying. However what makes this feature annoying is that it leaves opened folders all over the place which makes navigating up and down the tree structure confusing. So to solve that problem, but still allow Project Explorer to indicate the current location of a selected file, simply collapse the paths that don't have focus so there's only 1 path that's ever fully expanded at any given time.

Users, of course, could manually reopen folders that auto-collapsed OR turn the feature off.

If the feature request is still not clear, read through the dialoge of Bug 216578 for more detail.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.

Here's how I use the link-project-view-with-editor feature:

  1. click 'collapse all'
  2. click 'link with Editor'
  3. click 'unlink with Editor'

I'd propose this:

  1. add "expand all" (for smaller projects)
  2. add "follow editor" (like link-with-editor, but collapses all other trees)

I also suggest making "follow editor" the default.
