You would not have an error log if you downloaded the "Eclipse IDE for Java Developers" as it does not include the PDE which contributes the error log. Bug 50517 suggests that the error log has minimal dependencies, so it should be possible to include it in future versions of the package.

If my assumption is correct, please consider renaming this bug to "Include Error Log in 'Eclipse IDE...' packages" and reassign to Technology/EPP.
