fix manual mode with multiple simulations
This allows one to run 2 or more simulations and if running GE in manual mode (the default) it can switch the GE view between simulations.
It also adds some code for verifying that sufficient memory is available. It has nothing to do with the switch of views except that the switching problem was found while testing the memory check. The rest of the memory check code will be handled by 178370 or ?
