We should have a Target Platform defined for doing resource based applications.
The UI team spend time splitting the IDE from the SDK for allowing resource based RCP apps. The finishing touch would be a Target Platform in the list of default Target Platforms (down in the Preferences).

Kevin, it would be great if you could define the content of such a target is in a Target Definition file (File > New > Other... > Target Definition) and give it to us. We will then hook it up with an extension and include it

You can define this target in terms of plug-ins and/or features.

I spoke to Boris about this and we are investigating.

I've been trying to write a resource based RCP app but its turning out to be challenging for reasons unrelated to PDE and targets (mostly due to the interdependencies in the various IDE advisors). See bug #186891.

My current thinking is that until we can define a clear technical path for RCP developers, I am not sure publishing a resource based target will be of a lot of value.

moving back to Platform UI, if you come up with a target definition, we'll gladly include it with our other ones.

As in my previous comment, the problem is not so much coming up with one, its that its of minimal practical value until we (UI team) fix some of the other issues around indirect dependence on internal and ide classes.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
